Pitt School of Education jumps in U.S. News rankings: Now among top 25 in the country

University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this fall, has climbed U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Graduate Schools rankings.

The School of Education is now among the top 25 schools of education in the country, advancing from 32nd last year to 23rd in this year’s rankings, which are published in the 2011 edition of the U.S. News & World Report newsstand guidebook America’s Best Graduate Schools and online. Pittsburgh Named Most Livable City Again!

Forbes Magazine has once again named Pittsburgh its “Most Livable City” in its annual report that looks at cost of living, unemployment rate, income growth and crime rates, among other factors.

“Indeed, Pittsburgh’s art scene, job prospects, safety and affordability make it the most livable city in the country, according to measures studied,” according to the magazine.

New home sales jump from record low

Sales of new homes surged 27 percent last month, bouncing off the previous month’s record low and blowing past expectations as better weather and government incentives boosted sales.

The Commerce Department said Friday that new home sales rose in March to a seasonally adjusted annual sales pace of 411,000. It was the strongest month since last July and the biggest monthly increase in 47 years.

Home sales in region rise by 9 percent

The home sales market in the Pittsburgh region continued to improve early this year, with the number of homes sold up about 9 percent during January and February over the same two months last year, according to a report Thursday.

“The strong market is due, in large part, to the tax credit program plus the low mortgage interest rates,” said BeBe English, president of the Realtors Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh. “We are seeing multiple offers on houses, usually at the full price and homes selling within several days of being listed.”
